Thursday 21st July 10.30am to 12.30 pm. Design and make a gemstone fan necklace, choice of several different gemstones and you can select the beads you want to use with them to create your own original designer piece, cost of this workshop is £10 inclusive

Beaded wire flowers, can be used to decorate brooches, hairslides or anything else you fancy, come to the shop on Friday 22nd July at 1pm and learn how to make them. This lesson is £2.50 and takes about an hour.

Flowers and dragonflies, Friday 22nd July, 10.30am until 12 o'clock. Make some of these pretty seed bead and wire creations, this workshop is £5 inclusive of beads and wire.

Pretty little dragonflies are easy to make, just a few tiny beads, a little pair of wings and head pin.

They make lovely charms, I've used one on a bookmark. The wings are available from the shop and will be added to websites shortly along with the other new metal components we now have in stock.

The children seemed to enjoy it very much and many asked if we can have more workshops so we have decided to do crafts every Saturday, we'll have a selection of crafts available each week to choose from.

Knotted cord necklace variation

This is made using larks head knots as in the necklace in the previous post. I have used frosted glass washers round and oval lustered beads and a kiln glass donut.

How about this easy to make knotted necklace, all you need is some thin cotton cord 0.5mm or 1mm as long as it fits through the holes in your beads and a selelection of interesting glass beads. You can use any beads you like the beads I used are here.

Cut a piece of cord to the length you want your necklace to be. Decide how long you want the dangly bits to be, double that and allow a few inches extra for the knots, cut 3 pieces of cord to make the dangles, I've made the middle one longer. Take the middle cord, fold over and attach it to middle of the main cord with a larks head knot.

Arrange your beads on the cord and knot between them to hold in place.

Thread beads either side on main cord and add the other dangles in the same way.

Finish up with folding crimps and a clasp as shown in the previous post.

Try other variations, you could have five sets of dangles or add more but smaller beads for a more delicate look, experiment, do whatever takes your fancy and have fun!

Suede necklace using folding crimps

I am often asked how to attach a clasp to thick suede. I use folding crimps, the one's used here are 8mm silver plated, the cord is thick suede in purple, the pendant is a deep purple large glass cross

Place the cord into the crimp then with flat pliers fold one side of crimp over and squash it down hard to grip the cord, fold the other side over and squeeze down with your pliers. The clasp I have used is a large barrel clasp, it's easy to attach just open the loops on the clasp a little, hook them onto the loops on the folding crimps then close up the clasp loops.

Folding crimps also work well on thicker 1.5mm and 2mm leather and cotton cords. For thinner cords such as 1mm cotton or leather choose the 5mm folding crimps.

Chain and beaded drops

Here's a necklace I made by putting beads on headpins to create drops and hung from a chain.

Just thread the beads of youe choice onto headpins, turn a loop with round nosed pliers and attach to the chain. For this one I used lustred discs and 4mm lustered round beads. You can use any beads you like large or small to create your own original piece of jewellery.

Heart pendant necklace

This necklace is very pretty and fairly easy to make, I have used 14mm crystal heart pendants but you can substitute these with any pendants you like to create a necklace in your own style.

You will need

a 16" trace chain

five fancy droppers

three fancy bails

three pendants

9 5mm jump rings

Join the 5 fancy droppers together as arranged in the picture with the jumprings.
Cut the chain into 2 pieces at the centre and shorten to the length you require.
Join each end of the chain to the droppers with jumprings.
Attach a bail to each pendant.
Attach bails to fancy droppers with jumprings.

Memory wire bracelets

Memory wire bracelets are my favourite jewellery and they are so easy to make! It's called memory wire because it remembers its shape. No clasps required, great if you have difficulty doing up your bracelets, just wrap them around your wrist, wear just one or 2 or 3 or more together All you have to do is turn one end over with your pliers, to get as small a loop as possible I start with the round nose pliers and turn half a loop then close up the loop with flat pliers. Next thread on your chosen beads and turn a loop at the other end to finish off. You can use any beads you like but don't use very heavy beads near the ends as it will pull the ends down when you are wearing it.

These are made with quite small beads mostly seed beads and bugle beads.

These are just so georgeous, the one on the left is made with farfalle beads (butterfly beads) and the other one with clear seed beads and little groups of crystal ab drops.

Jewellery making classes

We decided to re-arrange the shop to create more space to display the products and a space to hold jewellery making and craft classes, its taking a lot longer than I expected but its coming along well, we managed to get a nice large table and chairs, a bargain at the second hand shop in Wickford and we are nearly ready to start. I will begin by doing jewellery making sessions for complete beginners which will be a one off afternoon or evening class covering the basics, enough to get anyone started. Also would like to do beading afternoons where you can just come along to bead and chat this will be Monday, Tuesday or Thursday afternoons, let me know if you would be interested in either of these ideas.

As many of you know shopping for beads with children in tow is very difficult so on Saturdays we will have things out on the craft table for the children to do while you shop. Of course even worse than a child in tow is a bored man they are welcome to sit and read the paper or join the kids in some craftwork if they wish.
